If you’re looking for an easy, family-friendly (and dog-friendly!) day trip from Columbus, Chillicothe is one of those underrated Ohio gems that totally delivers.
All in a day you can hike scenic trails, explore ancient earthworks, wander a charming downtown, and wrap it all up with one of the best local burger stops we’ve had in a while.
Here’s exactly how we spent our day in Chillicothe — plus tips to help you plan your own.

How Far is Chillicothe from Columbus?
Chillicothe is located about 50–60 minutes south of Columbus, making it one of the easiest day trips when you don’t want to overcommit to travel time.
Our Chillicothe Day Trip Itinerary
Stop 1: Great Seal State Park (Morning Hike)
We kicked off the day at Great Seal State Park, and wow — it is beautiful. There are wonderful rolling hills, wooded trails, and some lovely views.
One thing to note: there’s no visitor center, which we typically love for maps, a kids area, and a place to orient ourselves. So definitely plan ahead and check trail maps before you go.
That said, once you’re on the trails… it’s worth it.
Trail Options at Great Seal
There are 23+ miles of trails, ranging from gentle to steep and more challenging terrain. Some are shared with mountain bikers and horses, so just be aware depending on where you go.
We did:
- Sugarloaf Mountain Trail (yellow) – short but steep climb with incredible views
- Disc Golf Trail (white) – overlaps in parts and adds a fun, more relaxed loop
The Sugarloaf climb gains nearly 500 feet pretty quickly, but the payoff at the top is so worth it.
Good to know:
- Many trails are best for more experienced hikers or bikers
- Terrain includes hills, ravines, and wooded paths
- Bring water and wear good shoes
Time needed: 1–1.5 hours
Bonus: All trails are dog friendly so Annie came along and loved every second.

Stop 2: Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
Next up: one of the most unique historical sites in Ohio.
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is home to massive earthworks built over 2,000 years ago — and seeing them in person is really something special.
The grounds are wide open, peaceful, and super walkable — great for kids (or dogs!) to explore without feeling confined.
Highlights:
- Giant geometric earthworks
- Easy walking paths
- Visitor center with exhibits and Jr. Ranger tasks!
- Plenty of space to roam
It’s one of those stops that’s equal parts educational and relaxing.
Time needed: 30 minutes

Stop 3: Downtown Chillicothe (Shops + Sweet Treats)
Downtown Chillicothe is SO cute. Like… one of those places where you immediately start planning a return trip because there are too many shops and restaurants to fit into one visit.
Since we had Annie with us, we kept things quick and popped into:
Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop
Total nostalgia overload in the best way. Think old-school candy, fun finds, and a place where it’s impossible to leave empty-handed. Plus, they have a pretty epic $5 candy buffet.
Next time, we’re definitely planning more time here — there are so many boutiques, coffee shops, and local spots to check out.
Time needed: 30 minutes – 2 hours depending on the shopping

Stop 4: Sumburger (Don’t Skip This)
Okay… Sumburger alone might be worth the trip.
We tried the Double Sumburger and I’m still thinking about it. The homemade sauce? SO good. One of those classic, messy, craveable burgers that hits after a day outside.
What to order:
- Double Sumburger (trust me)
- Fries
- Strawberry pie (spring/summer!) 🍓
Yes, you need dessert. Do not skip it.
Time needed: 20-30 minutes

Bonus Stop: Rax Roast Beef (Because… Nostalgia)
We couldn’t pass it up — a quick stop at Rax for a snack felt like stepping straight back into childhood.
Is it necessary? No.
Is it fun? Absolutely.

Tips for Planning Your Chillicothe Day Trip
We love a good day trip and part of that is making sure we have fun in the car too! First, we make sure the kids are involved in picking out what they want in the car. Olivia is happy to read, watch a show on her iPad, or play games like “Guess the Animal.” Finn would prefer to color, do sticker books, or chit chat about every thing we drive by on our trip especially the animals.
Here are some other tips to make the day go smoothly:
- Check trail maps ahead of time (no visitor center at Great Seal!)
- Wear sturdy shoes — trails can be steep
- Bring water, especially for hiking
- Plan a second trip for downtown (you’ll want more time)
- Don’t skip Sumburger dessert
Oh, and pack snacks. Always. Then, pack more snacks. A trip can be ruined by one hangry child… or adult.
Why Chillicothe is Worth the Trip
Chillicothe is one of those places that just works for a day trip. It’s close, it’s easy, and it packs in a little bit of everything — nature, history, charm, and really good food.
And honestly? We’re already planning a return trip… mostly for more downtown exploring (and another Sumburger 👀).
