A Sweet Little Day Trip from Columbus: Exploring Logan County, Ohio
If you’re looking for a charming and easy day trip from Columbus that includes scenic trails, small-town charm, and plenty of delicious treats, Logan County might just be your next go-to destination. Located about an hour northwest of Columbus, Logan County offers a perfect blend of outdoor exploration and cozy, local shops—and it’s just the right distance for a relaxed family road trip.
We recently spent the day exploring this area with our kids and our dog, Annie, and found ourselves completely charmed by the peaceful nature spots, welcoming small businesses, and of course, some very tasty stops along the way.
Start with Nature: Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve
Our first stop was Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve, a protected natural area supported by The Nature Conservancy. Located just on the edge of Logan County, this preserve is a hidden gem. The short, well-maintained path winds through restored wetlands and prairie, making it ideal for kids to explore without being too long or strenuous. There’s also a sweet little nature play area, where kids can interact with logs, rocks, and natural features that encourage imaginative, hands-on play.
One of our favorite parts? It’s dog-friendly. Annie loved trotting along the path and soaking up all the new scents, and we appreciated the quiet, off-the-beaten-path vibe. It’s a peaceful way to start the day and a reminder of how important it is to protect spaces like these for future generations.
Small-Town Finds and Farm Store Favorites
After getting our nature fix, we decided to explore more of what Logan County had to offer. We stumbled upon a local farm store that, while just about to close, gave us a quick glimpse into its treasure trove of local goods. Room after room was filled with handmade gifts, pantry staples, and locally produced snacks. We grabbed a bag of warm roasted cashews—trust me, they were worth the trip alone. We love exploring these little stores and always stop when we can.
Coffee and Charm at Sweetie Pies in West Liberty
Next up: caffeine. We headed into the heart of West Liberty and discovered Sweetie Pies, a cozy coffee shop that checked all the boxes. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay a while. The menu includes coffee, teas, fresh sandwiches, and homemade treats, along with shelves of unique gifts and an impressive collection of stickers. I managed to resist buying them all, but it wasn’t easy.
Sweetie Pies is the perfect place to pause mid-day, warm up with a cup of coffee, and soak in the small-town atmosphere that makes Logan County so special. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or just looking for a quick bite, it’s well worth the stop.
A Sweet Ending: Marie’s Candies
We wrapped up our little loop at one of Logan County’s most iconic destinations—Marie’s Candies. Housed in a restored train depot in West Liberty, this family-owned chocolate shop has been delighting locals and visitors since 1956. Walking into Marie’s feels a bit like stepping back in time. The cases are filled with handcrafted chocolates, caramels, brittles, and seasonal specialties—each one made with care and tradition.
Because we visited just before Easter, the shop was decked out in colorful foil-wrapped eggs, chocolate bunnies, and nostalgic treats that made us feel like kids again. It was nearly impossible to choose just one thing, and honestly, we didn’t. Marie’s is a place you’ll want to return to again and again—not just for the sweets, but for the story behind them.
