Have you been following along on our Instagram this week?! We are in the Outer Banks! My family goes every year, but this is the first time in about five years that I’m visiting and the first time ever The Beard is joining. Since we had a few built-in babysitters, we decided to make a few tasty appetizers to enjoy on our beach front patio alongside some fabulous wines.
Is there really any better family style dish than guacamole? Yep, crab guacamole! We’re right on the water, which means that fresh seafood isn’t too hard to come by here. Plus, it pairs pretty flawlessly with one of first wine option for our al fresco meal, a fruity and crisp Chardonnay.
We are staying in a beach house, which comes with slim pickings when it comes to cooking supplies. About 75% of the way through mashing my avocados with a large salad fork, The Beard notified me that there was indeed a potato masher in our arsenal. Check your supplies before you cook, people! At least I got a good arm workout for the day.
You can’t just have one appetizer when you are hosting 6 people on the ocean front patio. While I was in charge of the crab guacamole, The Beard was in charge of the crostini appetizer that paired nicely with our second wine of the night, an oaky and buttery Chardonnay. Toast up slices of a baguette, smear on a bit of goat cheese, layer on a sliced green apple and a slice of prosciutto and top with a drizzle of honey.
Now the best part about an al fresco beach patio party, the beverages! We picked up a few bottles of Chardonnay from Notable Wines at our local grocery store. The name of their wine isn’t just cute, it’s helpful! On the label, you’ll see a few music notes (get it, Notable) with descriptors assigned to each note. Oh, so clever. Our first wine being served with our crab guacamole is a fruity and crisp Chardonnay, hailing from Australia. The music notes on the label boast flavors like melon, peach, and citrus. What better to go alongside that slightly tart and smooth wine than a citrusy little dip and some salty chips. It was actually quite a perfect pairing, according to our fellow patio party guests. The second drink of the night is another Chardonnay, which boasts flavors of oak, butter, and vanilla. Isn’t the thought of that glass of wine being enjoyed alongside prosciutto just making your mouth water. The Beard might not be the biggest wine drinker in the world, but man, does he know how to pair them. Lucky for him, now he knows how to choose the perfect Notable wine, just follow the music (and flavor) notes right on the bottle!
I’ll give you my number one party hack that will take any get together from so-so, to amazing. The antipasti bar at your local grocery store! It doesn’t just have olives but also features items like sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic cloves, roasted artichokes and so much more. Usually, it’s under $10/pound (be careful with liquid) so I grab about a cup of yummy treats to add to the party. This time around, I picked up a few olives that were a nice little addition to help switch up the flavors at our little shin dig.
Besides great company, great food, and great wine, there is one more thing that makes it a great party, a great playlist! Not only did we have the natural music of the ocean to help us relax, we turned on the sounds of our favorite local band to keep our spirits high. It’s only fitting to have good music when our beverage of choice celebrates strong flavor notes.
Are you heading to the beach this summer? What will you be enjoying on your ocean front patio? Even if you are enjoying it from the couch surrounded by a dog and maybe a sleeping baby, treat yourself with a glass of wine and some fancy guacamole. You deserve it.
- 3 medium, ripe avocados
- 1 whole jalapeño, diced
- 1/4 cup red onion, diced
- 6 ounces claw crab meat
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
- salt and pepper, to taste
- Cut avocados and remove seed. Set in large mixing bowl.
- Add diced jalapeno, diced red onion and fresh lime juice.
- Mash ingredients together.
- Once you reach desired consistency, add crab meat (reserve about 1 oz). Taste test and add salt and pepper, as desired.
- Scoop into serving bowl and top with reserved 1oz of crab meat.
- Serve with favorite tortilla chips alongside Notable Wines Chardonnay!
- I slice up my avocados in the skin before I mash them, I think it helps make it easier to mix up!
- If you don't have a potato masher, you can just use a fork, as long as your avocados are ripe enough.
